You can very easily get anywhere by public transport. Especially if you don't travel at night.

To pay for public transport, you can always buy a ticket when you board.

But easier, faster and (with a few trips) also cheaper is with an OV Chipkaart, the official card for public transport valid throughout the Netherlands.

You buy an empty/anonymous chip card for €7.50, which you then top up using your bank card/credit card or cash. You then check in yourself when boarding and check out yourself when disembarking and pay only for distance travelled.
